Launched in 2008 by designer Kristy Barber, Kuwaii has flourished as a bastion of slow fashion, guided by a steadfast commitment to sustainability and integrity.

Kristy's journey into the world of fashion began as a child sewing dolls clothing. She went on to study at TAFE, culminating in the prestigious 'Student Fashion Designer of The Year' award at L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival in 2007. Fuelled by her vision for beautiful yet timeless clothing, made locally, Kristy embarked on a transformative journey, immersing herself in the fashion scene of New York City through an internship with designer Phillip Lim.

Returning to her roots in Melbourne, Kristy's dream took shape with the establishment in 2011 of Kuwaii's flagship store in the heart of Brunswick.

What sets Kuwaii apart is not only its dedication to quality and design but also its unwavering commitment to ethical practices. Unlike many in the industry, Kristy has never sought external funding, allowing Kristy to maintain full control over Kuwaii's creative process and uphold its values without compromise.

Kristy's personal journey, marked by moments of triumph and resilience, has deeply influenced the ethos of Kuwaii. From overcoming health challenges to embracing the joys & challenges of motherhood, each experience has left an indelible mark on Kristy's designs, imbuing them with a sense of empathy and purpose.

In 2021, Kristy faced a series of heart attacks that served as a poignant reminder of life's fragility and the importance of cherishing every moment. These experiences have only strengthened Kuwaii's resolve to create fashion that not only celebrates individuality but also respects the planet we call home.

At Kuwaii, sustainability is not just a word but a way of life. By embracing eco-friendly materials and ethical, local production methods, while remaining staunchly 100% independently women owned, Kuwaii strives to minimise its environmental footprint while maximising its positive impact on the world.
